Day 2 / 1 in NZ
News from New Zealand: everyone arrived safely, with no dramas. It was a great flight, and the motel is awesome. We’re actually sharing the motel with a Kiwi swim team — so the battle is on!
Day 3 / 2 in NZ
Weather report: Today was a nice sunny day - t-shirts and pants weather and a light jacket in the evening.
Today we went to the pool for the first time. We had two good training sessions - it was great to meet some NZ swimmers and swim in the pool. We sent the middle of the day at Te Papa. It was a very interesting place - something between a museum, science centre, art show, culture centre … it was just amazing. Tonight after our training session Amy Thompson competed in a 1500m Freestyle Time Trail. She did a really awesome job and managed to do a PB in the event. So CONGRATULATIONS must go to Amy for a great swim.Amy’s swim tonight also gave us the chance to practice our team sprit – all clubs that had swimmers competing where as close as possible to the side of the pool and the ‘Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi’ really came out loud.We are all looking forward to the first day of competition tomorrow. Until tomorrow – Have fun, cause we are!
Day 4 / 3 in NZ (sorry for the late post, busy day at the pool)
Report by Ryan
Weather report: Mild and Sunny in the morning. Changed to cool, windy and wet while the session was in progress
Everyone swan well yesterday. Good PBs in most races: Emily Howe, Bradley Byrne, Emily Goddard, Lydia Goddard, Mitch Tronc, Ryan O’Sullivan, Alex Collins and Amy Thompson all made finals in their respective events. Bradley came through with a silver in the 200m freestyle and bronze in the 100m backstroke. Ryan came 2nd in the 100m breastroke. No luck in the relays, although alot of fun was had and was very exciting to watch. Cheerleader Kerrod, who looks great in a short skirt, has a sore throat from all the yelling in the finals. Rivalry friendships were made with the NZ’s sitting next to us, and the mexican wave prevailed again.
Day 5 / 4 in NZ
Weather report: Rain - the 9am weather report said 10 degrees and dropping. It was a great day to test out our nice warm uniform.
What a fantasic day we had today. We arrived at the pool to find our seating right next to the announcer. Ryan organised with him to play Amy’s song while she walked out for her final. All swimmers completed today including Emily G. and Jake P. who had the day off except for their relays - they became the substitute medal participants for evening presentations.
Individual Finalists: Emily H, Nicole, Bicanca, Brad, Amy, Lydia, Ashlea, Joe.
Surprise from yesterday: Our evening started tonight with a bang with finding out that our 15 & Under girls relay team won Bronze in their 4 x 50m Freestyle. It was great to see them on the dias (photo in gallery). Amy came 2nd in her 800m Freestyle - behind a 33 year old swimmer who took 2 seconds off the NZ record for the event. It was a very exciting event with everyone standing on pool deck cheering her on.
Team sprit: our team sprit went beyond our team tonight when a fellow Aussie (Caitlin Smith from Albany Creek) won Gold in the 50m Butterfly - it was great to cheer on a fellow Aussie.
Medalists: Brad, Amy, 15 & Under Girls Freestyle team.
To top off a great day: We were all so excited when Joe can in with a hugh smile on his face as his coach was so happy with in performances after only one week of training in a 50m and training since in a 12m pool.
By from the girls - room clean, kids fed and asleep, coaches retaired hours ago, and now the website is up to date (11.45pm local time) GOOD NIGHT!!!!
Day 6 / 5 in NZ
Weather report: Cold, wet and windy…. just like Wellington should be… we almost Di when a gust of wind caught her jacket and almost made her the next Mary Poppins.
Individual Finalists: Brad, Alex, Ashlea, Mitch, Kyle, Nicole.
Team Sprit: Today we did some shopping to buy some green and gold items to really make our team stand out - it’s rather strange to be refered to as the ‘Australian Team’ so tonight we decided we needed to look the part. You really just need to check out some of the photo’s on the photo gallery to see how great it looks.
Medalists: <<<GOLD GOLD GOLD>>> Alex Collins wins GOLD his 200m Breaststroke. Brad Byrne and Mitch Tronc came away with a Bronze to top off a great day for the guys. The girls 15 & Under Freestyle relay team also came away with another Bronze to top off a really great day.
